This is where many of the local artists have their work framed to an extremely high standard, but there is also a lot of interest from our customers in more unusual types of framing.
For example, signed football shirts are routinely framed (a very careful and meticulous process) and people bring in beautiful samplers to be set off in the best possible way. Much of the Art Department’s work is in reframing and remounting our customers’ favourite paintings or posters, and sometimes eBay purchases of record sleeves are framed or oil paintings are brought in to be restretched and mounted. There are lots of framing and mounting materials to choose from and if you would like help with the choice, there’s a friendly and helpful member of staff to do just that, and to make the process as easy for you as possible.
There’s more here too……Artist’s easels, paints, brushes, paper and boards are available as you might expect, but there is also quite a selection of ship and aeroplane models (flying and static) and model paints together with some items for the “Warhammer” officiando.
Here you’ll find all the goods you would expect in a High Street hardware shop, together with some you wouldn’t :
There are adhesives, household cleaning materials, brooms and brushes, a wide range of light bulbs, fluorescent tubes, cooling fans in summer, gas heaters in winter, pest control materials, cooking and kitchenware, wall hooks, bathrooms plugs, wire and all you need for that small job around the house.
There is a large section devoted to knitting and haberdashery in which you can buy wool and knitting patterns, threads, buttons and a wide variety of decorative ribbon which can be cut to length for you.
If you can’t find what you want here, you’ll find it in “The Back Shop” which is just across the Builders Yard behind the High Street Shop.
We’re now outside the rear of the High Street Shop looking out across the Yard to the right hand corner, where we’ll find the entrance to “The Back Shop”.
The yard itself is stacked with timber, aggregates, garden stone, paving slabs, fencing materials and posts. In the summer, there’s a large supply of garden compost out there, in the winter, it’s coal, logs and road salt. It’s usually a busy yard, with some provision for customer parking, and Carey’s own truck is in and out, delivering your goods all around the local area.
As we walk across to the shop entrance, there’s a large open covered area on the right, which stores logs, coal and wheelbarrows in the winter, but really comes alive in the summer with a great display of garden tools, fertilisers, pest control and fertilising materials.
Inside the Back Shop itself, the first area you come to specializes in decorating materials, with a colourful display of fillers, scrapers, paints, brushes and rollers. You then pass through to the main part of the shop which stocks a very wide range of plumbing and electrical goods. All types of cable can be cut to length for you, and it’s here that you can order timber and sheet materials. Nails and screws of every size are kept in small or large quantities, along with coachbolts, wire netting, angle bead, hooks and everything you need for that small (or not so small) home repair or improvement along with all the expert guidance you could wish for.
